Whoa... [21 Oct 2004|06:48am]
Someone needs to instruct me on how to make an LJ cut because I'm far too lazy to look up such information on my own!

I get my physics test back today hopefully. I finally finished that Stratigraphy term paper (about 45 minutes after it was due) and I managed to get an A- on my Latin midterm. We can do test corrections though and get the next higher grade level, so I should have an A+ on that after she looks over my corrections. The good thing is that there are no Latin quizzes anytime soon. I'm optimistic that the lack of Latin studying will free some time up.

Now I've just got to study for my next Calculus test, and then look over Optical Mineralogy and Stratigraphy for exams next week and the week after. I should probably get around to learning that physics stuff too...or at least doing the homework problems.

Why do I study? [12 Oct 2004|08:07pm]
[ mood | relieved ]
[ music | Cake - Frank Sinatra ]

OMG, I'm so glad I didn't waste time studying for that Physics test! Why do I ever really even bother studying? LOL. Actually though, I got soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lucky on this test. The test itself was really pretty easy! (plus it was open-book, notes, whatever) There were four problems, one involving a ramp-slidy thing and another had a tennis ball instead of a rock, but it was the same thing really (because he treated it like a rock and didn't ask stuff about bounces or anything...), so half of it I actually knew how to do. One of the other problems was really similar to one he worked in class and the other problem was something I figured out in the 30 minutes or so I had left to work it. I got answers that at least made sense in context, so hopefully I didn't completely blow it or something. (and if so, I'll be in blissful ignorance about it for a while...) The cool thing is that I totally feel like I understood everything. Like, for 90 minutes, physics made total perfect sense and everything just...flowed out. (zen and physics exams...)

And more good news...the prof I wanted to work with for my senior thesis will definitely be sticking around for the next two years. (The uncertainty on that was the thing holding me back from committing to it.) Then, I'm doing this project with a really finicky procedure and I made it past the hard part without completely screwing everything up...and it turns out it's going to be more interesting than I thought. And I got a flu shot (which are apparently in limited supply). Plus, I finally made some appointments I've been procrastinating.

Whew, I feel like a load has been lifted. Oooh, and Farenheit 911, and the last 2 DS9 dvds came today from Netflix! Rule!

Guess who totally blew off studying for Physics? Woohoo!! *raises hand* I'm so not looking forward to today. Keep your fingers crossed that all 5 questions are like, rocks being thrown in the air or boxes sliding down ramps, because that's pretty much all I can do.

[ mood | distressed ]

OMG, I can't believe how overwhelmed I am this semester. I was sitting there last night thinking how absolutely amazing and useful a time-turner would be. And yes...I would use it to study (and maybe even sleep).

I have soooooooooo much shit to do. I have a physics exam on Tuesday and as it's so late in the semester, I have literally completely ignored all of it until now (just trying to keep afloat in all my other classes). So I have 7 chapters of Physics to LEARN by Tuesday...gah. Well, Chapter 1 is conversions and basic vector stuff, so technically it's only 6 chapters. *dies*

I totally failed two exams this semester. I got a 50 (!!!) on the one I talked about in my last entry. (Ok, including the practical it was a 65, and it actually is something like a B *shudder*). I got a 59 on my cal III exam. I got a C+ on a project in my strat class. I've even stormed out of THREE classes this semester because of complete irritation with profs. :(

The good news is that I got an 80 on the second optical mineralogy exam and it was probably the highest grade (and safely in A-territory). I got an A- on the next strat project...and even the C+ was one of the top grades. I really need to chill out or something... :(

I'm just really freaking out because I'm probably not going to get all A's this semester. Sigh. I so hate facing the fact that I cannot be perfect.

OK, so, this weekend, I have physics, a paper in Strat, 2 chapters (9 sections) of Cal III, and a Latin midterm next Friday (I STILL have not learned declensions 2 and 3 or the conjugation of esse and possum.) Plus, I've got like 4 projects I need to get stuff done on for work. AND I have a field trip next weekend.

So anyway, I'm not dead, and I'm not mad at any of you. Sorry I haven't commented in a while on any of your journals (or updated mine), but I really am reading them.

Hopefully I'll get caught up soon...

Yay! [14 Sep 2004|06:44pm]
[ mood | relieved ]
[ music | Twisted Nerve - Bernard Hermann (stuck in my head) ]

I just finished my first optical mineralogy exam. Whee for physics in a non-physics class. :P Actually, this test was MUCH easier than I expected...the same prof taught mineralogy last semester and the tests were MUCH MUCH harder. So, the good thing is that despite starting studying at 5 pm last night, I think I sufficiently learned the material and did ok on the test.

And, I finally finished three long-ish lab assignments and got a bit caught up. Now all I've got to catch up is like 5 sections of Calculus III. There is a light at the end of that tunnel anyways...

Anyway, sorry for not commenting on anyone's journal lately (and I forgive you all for not commenting on mine!)! Glad your wrist is better, Erin. Dru - I'm on Season 6 now...finally seeing some DS9's I hadn't seen before. Silvy - Yay for school...now you and I can do Latin homework together!!

And, speaking of Latin, I got Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis finally. It's pretty funny, with just a little Latin knowledge (like the endings and sentence construction), you can really pretty much work out the vocabulary in any sentence based on the English. Of course, knowing the book by heart helps a bit too. ;)

Names aren't too different, except there were a few direct English-to-Latin translations (Longbottom, Brown, Wood, etc) (I'm at school and don't have the words handy) and all the names have Latin endings (and declinsions). The author commented somewhere about not using Harrius Figulus hehe...but Potter worked too. It's funny how many names already have Latin endings (and well, are latin words anyway)-- Severus, Sirius, Lucius, Draco, Albus, Rubeus...I'm still trying to work out the word used for 'he who must not be named' (though voldemort is Voldemort). Ron is Ronaldus...Percy is Persius.

It's weird to read because the author didn't use capitilization for sentences...which is true to the language. Thankfully, he did use punctuation. I don't think I'd want to look for subject-verb sandwiches everywhere...lol.

Mmm...physics [24 Aug 2004|09:53pm]
I went to all my new classes, and so far so good! I ended up switching from Physics II to I because my professor freaked when I told him I hadn't taken I yet. I tried to explain that I was like....all Hermione-ish and stuff, but he seemed unconvinced and suggested I at least sit in on this other prof's Physics I class which happened to follow his (and still fit in my schedule). So I did. And OMFG THE PROF WAS HOT. HOT HOT HOT ITALIAN PROF. Amazing accent too! MmMmMm. Err, yeah and he explains physics well and in a non-scary way too.

Yeah, so anyway, I'm taking Physics I now. (This is the part where Hermy dies when she finds out her prof reads LJs or something...)

And, that means I have to switch books, Drey...I'll update you on the new ones the department is using. The good thing is I'm way ahead now, having already reviewed vectors and Newton's laws. :)

Oh yeah, and my Latin prof totally asked us why we took Latin. So I said a bunch of stuff about the GRE and paleontology, plus being interested in philology and etymology and stuff....but then I couldn't resist and I added "and so I'll catch the Latin in-jokes in the Harry Potter series." LOL. I wonder if she'll comment! I am such a dork!

Lalala [18 Aug 2004|12:55pm]
Hello again. I'm supposed to be doing this incredibly boring tutorial for this program (which is pretty cool, but apparently can have very boring applications).

School starts in 5 days! I still don't have my Geology books (the two bookstores here have different ones listed in each for the same course...so I'll wait until class starts to make sure.) I looked through my Physics book (I actually read the first two chapters of Volume I -- since I'm still paranoid that doing things backwards might be scary.)

I've become obsessed with crossword puzzles. I got a book of pretty tough ones and I've been doing them for the past month. The upside to this is that I can now do the one in the school paper in like 5 minutes. It used to take me 50 minutes. The bad part, is that I know it took 50 minutes because I could count on it for occupying my otherwise bored brain during one class. Sigh.
I've also learned lots of useless trivia...and that there are lots of words crossword people like to use over and over. Like the Taj Mahal is in AGRA. That one comes up a lot.

Wow, I am a supernerd. I just made a journal post about reading books before school started and doing crossword puzzles. :P

Lucky 13 [13 Aug 2004|11:36am]
Hey, today's Friday the 13th. Wooot! Happy birthday, mom. Since I'm setting up a new computer and internet account for her, she might actually be able to see this one. :)

Random note: Kill Bill Vol. II is very cool. It's pretty different from Vol. I, but it reminded me a lot more of the old Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone films (which I *love*). QT rocks!

Err... [11 Aug 2004|10:43pm]
I'm still alive! Sorry I haven't updated or commented in a while, but I've been pretty busy.

First, I did all the lab analysis for our Yellowstone samples, which took about two weeks. I got to use the ICP lab, which was cool because the plasma torch in there was HOTTER THAN THE SUN (seriously). Which seems weird, because the room itself was freezing. Anyway, mostly I sat there and then every 5 minutes or so I pushed a button and changed samples out. Science is exciting! Actually, I read a really good book called Krakatoa while I was waiting. It's pretty interesting, even for non-geology geeks. It's about the historical, political and social implications of the eruption of an Indonesian island in the late 1800s.

Then, after I finished up in the lab, I went to Iowa with my mom to visit relatives. It was pretty cool, plus I got to go to a history museum in Omaha, Nebraska that I've wanted to visit for a long time. It's the site of 'Winter Quarters,' which was where Mormon pioneers set up camp during their migration to Salt Lake City. It probably sounds boring to everyone, but I totally love pioneer history in general and am especially fascinated by the Mormon Trail.

I also did some downright country stuff...went to the county fair, made lots of cookies for my grandparents, rode horses, took care of animals, picked fresh garden veggies, etc.

Hmm, let's see...what else is new? Not much. School starts soon (I really should find out when), I'm still watching DS9 (up to season 4 now!) I bought Kill Bill vol. 2 today, and I'm super looking forward to the Olympics (Hermy is a WAY HUGE Olympic junkie!). I prefer the winter games, but I really love them all...

Welcome to Katrina and Sandra! Sorry it took me so long to add y'all but you're in now!

Procrastinating [16 Jul 2004|12:34pm]
[ mood | bored ]
[ music | North by Northwest theme ]

I'm in the school lab staring at mineral crystals again. Surprisingly, it's quite boring when you HAVE to do it...so I'm procrastinating. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESSICA!!!! (Sorry, I haven't bothered to figure out how to make things like 29884 point bold type font yet.) I found a thingie on this mac that plays streaming radio stations. Whee! I found one called "Fistful of Soundtracks" which rules, because Fistful of Dollars is one of my all-time favorite film scores. Admittedly, I had to resort to this because I couldn't figure out how to open the stupid CD player on this Mac and Mella and Drey don't seem to be around to come to my rescue. Didn't they used to just have an open slot? I know there's a slot hiding behind this panel thingie, but I can't make it open. Hermy suddenly realizes how it must feel to be Goyle... :/ Anyway, this radio thingie is pretty nifty, and off and on they're playing stuff off the only CDs I brought with me anyway (Kill Bill soundtracks). Oooh, and I also figured out how to use web-based AIM so I'm idling there too. P.S. I like how the mac's LiveJournal editor completely ignores linebreaks. :P

Multimedia Overload [14 Jul 2004|06:45pm]
[ mood | bouncy ]
[ music | Ode to Oren Ishii - The RZA ]

OK, so I didn't actually drop entirely off the planet...but I've been a bit scarce lately. First, we had some family visiting...which is always nice. Even nicer when I've personally managed to get my mother-in-law totally obsessed with HP lately. *evil grin* She actually called me the other night to tell me that Erised is Desire backwards. LOL. I've so created a monster...mwahahaha!

And yay, I finally got cable again. Except it's apparently free. Well, my apartment complex decided to offer it...so like...my television has a picture and stuff. Spazz! And, I joined Netflix the day before that happened...so I have tons of DVDs to watch (I've got something like 200 in my queue. ROCK! AND...we finally cashed in our mega Amazon gift certificate collection...and I got a bunch of cool and not so cool stuff. Pulp Fiction CE, Alien CE, Kill Bill Vol.1 (DID YOU WATCH IT YET, MELLA??! OMG ROCK!), the soundtracks for KB 1 & 2, Spaceballs, Goonies, Northern Exposure (which is FINALLY on DVD for season 1 at least), Bowling for Columbine...and probably some others I can't think of at the moment.

I've been revisitting some old computer games too. Not too old...just games I stopped playing for a while. I finished Emperor...which is Sierra Game's sim-city like game but where you build cities in historic China. It's the sequel/follow-up to Caesar, Zeus, Pharaoh, etc. And then I reinstalled Zeus/Poseidon (the ancient Greek version) and started playing the campaigns which are loosely based on The Odyssey, the Iliad, and other such stories. Having just read those two books recently, it's much more amusing than it was last time I played. I like how there's an episode where the goal is to build a bunch of nice houses (a palace for each of the "suitors") and then you have to have a bunch of wine and meat and stuff to 'win' that level. Trust me, that's much funnier with the Odyssey fresh in your mind. On the other hand, I'm a bit disappointed that Achilles looks NOTHING like Brad Pitt. Some hero...pffft.

Oooh...Sorry [02 Jul 2004|12:36pm]
[ mood | groggy ]
[ music | Mischief Managed! ]

I just realized that even though I came here like 10 times this past week with the intent of updating, I got distracted each time and never actually did it! :/

OK, so I'm a dork. Here's a wild evening in the world of Heathermione:

I went to my mom's house to surprise her by cleaning her pool and doing some house-stuff for her. Well, really I went to play with her AWESOME KITTY! But I did that other stuff too. Then my friend called because she couldn't fit her new license plate on the front her car and was freaking out because she was sure she'd get pulled over for not having a front plate. So, she came over and we engineered some fix...and yeah, boring story. So my mom came home, and we watched the Discovery Health Channel (did you know there's a whole channel about weird health problems?!) and some show about hermaphrodites...which was really interesting. Then, we left, and went back to my house...with the family Trivial Pursuit set from like...1982 or something. And then we played that until 7 am. You know...after drinking 12 ounces of Rum, I get surprisingly better at remembering useless trivia.

OK, 4 hours sleep. I might be drunk still...

Today will be fun!

I'm finally back at home! Wow, I'm exhausted. I added those of you who found me while I was away...and welcome to my LJ. Though I think everyone seems to be having LJ issues currently, I redid my layout because some people were having problems with the huge background.

I'll write more later, but right now I'm still pretty roadlagged.

Yellowstone! [18 Jun 2004|11:07am]
[ mood | rejuvenated ]
[ music | People whining about waiting for computers. ]

Hi everyone! My hotel here in West Yellowstone is close to the public library. Free access, but only for 30 minutes each day! *dies* LOL.

The trip's going pretty well. I've seen wild horses, a bear, three wolves, bighorn sheep, antelope, moose, elk, bison, deer, three bald eagles, a nesting osprey and a ton more things that I'm probably forgetting.

The sampling and research stuff is cool, but we start at 4 am (OMG!) and we're usually done by 8. This means we've got lots of time to explore. We've done some hiking and I took a really amazing driving trip through a big chunk of Montana...which so far is absolutely the most beautiful state I've seen!

Anyway, I'll be home in about 10 days hopefully. Send me email and stuff!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, everyone. I'm going to try to reply to everyone's journal before I take off, but I've still gotta pack and stuff, and we're going out to dinner.

PoA # 3 today! Woo! Keeps getting better, really. If that's even possible! :)

Wow. I mean...wow. PoA is like...pretty good and stuff. I don't wanna post major spoilers just yet, because I know most of you weren't freaks sitting in the line for the midnight showing....but wow. Go. Now. Enjoy!

[Edit] Well, I just spent the evening arguing with stupid people in some chat room about why the movie isn't horrible. Blah. If you're expecting the MOVIE to be exactly like the BOOK, and you can't accept differences, save your money and stay home. Otherwise, Go. Now. Enjoy!

P.S. God I miss TTB. RIP TTB?

Clues to Book 6 & 7 in PoA movie [28 May 2004|03:23pm]
Here's a cool interview with JKR in USA Today, which says that Alfonso Cuaron sort of stumbled into some clues with some of the changes he did in the PoA film. Of course, she's not being specific, but she says they gave her chills when she saw the film. :)

She's such a tease!

newness [22 May 2004|10:28am]
Well, we're still in Tennessee. We're leaving tomorrow, so I'll be back home in a couple of days. We got our new truck! It's black...for some reason I thought it was red...but black looks cooler. So anyway, yeah, in case you wondered where the heck I've been...

And it's official...straight A's, Dean's List, and an overall GPA higher than Pi again. Woot! I was going to take Astronomy for fun this summer but the total cost for 3 freaking hours was over $600. WTF!? So I might just sit in on the lecture (I've got an older version of the textbook they use already) and listen but not try to take the actual class for credit (which I really don't need anyway). Too bad they're not actually offering anything USEFUL in the second summer session (like Physics or Calculus III)! Grrr! </rant>
